We are so happy to offer Bunnell Organic’s high quality compost and humus to the Flagler Community. Mary and Allen Whitham have created a high quality product and the Flagler Community is really lucky to have it available for your home gardens.
They gather, grind and mix all the raw materials for their compost. They then pile or windrow the raw compost and let heat to between 140 degrees to 160 degrees. You can see steam coming off the piles. They turn the compost until it no longer heats up, then age it for a while, after which it is finished and ready to be used. This process takes 3 to 5 months .We guarantee your satisfaction.
Compost: What is it?
Compost is organic matter decomposed into a humus-like substance. Fresh materials in the right proportions, with the right oxygen and moisture conditions, cause a rapid multiplication of micro-organisms which break down the organic matter. Then a second group of microbes binds these materials together into humic substances, creating a stable product that will release its nutrients at the proper rate and proportions for optimal plant growth.
Bunnell Organics compost contains rotted tree laeves, bark and wood, animal manure, seaweed powder, montmorillonite clay, feather meal, rock dust , fish meal, kitchen and garden scraps.
Benefits of Compost
Compost provides major and minor nutrients, and is an especially good supplier of trace minerals. Compost microbes secrete chelating agents, which unlock nutrients in the soil. compost improves soil texture, increasing the moisture holding capacity and improving drought resistance.
Compost neutralizes soil toxins and harmful compounds, such as heavy metals, by making them unavailable to plants. The micro-organisms in compost produce natural soil antibiotics, enzymes and vitamins as byproducts of their metabolism, improving plant vigor and disease resistance.
How to use Compost
-
For House Plants
We suggest sprinkling about 1/2 cup compost around a small plant or 1 cup for a larger plant. Water in. Repeat every month or two, or as needed.
-
For Shrubs or Trees
It is best to sprinkle the compost around the drip line.
-
For Potting Up Plants
Our compost is a great addition to your potting mix. Starting seeds in one-half compost and one-half potting soil gets them off to a great start.
-
For Vegetable and Flower Gardens
After years of practice, we have learned that the best results come from mixing the compost into the upper layer of the soil before planting. Good results are also obtained from side-dressing, broadcasting or mixing compost with your other fertilizers. One of our customers had excellent results by digging a hole for each vegetable plant and putting compost in the root zone.
