Food Rules

I just read a sweet paperback book “Food Rules – An Eater’s Manual” by Michael Pollan.  I saw Michael Pollan on the “Daily Show” with John Stewart last week.  Food Rules is a simple to read delight with common sense advice about food.  It is a wake up call from your great-grand-mother about what we are calling food and what we need to know about how the food industry manipulates us and markets their processed products.

This little book has 64 rules that hit home with their sensibility and ask us to wake up to what we are being sold, what we think food is and to realize that our health and our diets are connected.  I want to share 5 of my favorites with you.

  1. “If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t”.

Processed food is dead food. Eat live food. Munch on a carrot, enjoy a celery stalk or a fresh apple. Live food contain nutrients and enzymes you need. Processed food have been heated and most of the nutrients and enzymes are killed during that process.

  2. “Don’t eat anything your great-grand mother wouldn’t recognize as food”.

Times have changed and we have made great progress in many areas and although my great grand mother would not be able to recognize many common everyday things, she did know unprocessed food and simple be unable to recognize a plastic tube of processed food.

  3. “Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk”.

If your food is a color not found in nature, I would think twice about serving it your your kids or eating it yourself.

  4. “Eat your colors”.

Phytonutrients – Many years ago, when I first got into food and before I had ever heard of phytonutrients I thought “ what if you could eat for nutrition by color?” Years later I realize you can and that the organic components of plants that indicate the color contain powerful antioxidants.

  5. “Eat some foods that have been predigested by bacteria or fungi”.

    - I love this one so much but like many of us fail to practice it often enough. My friend Bryan Anderson lives by it and has introduce me to making Kombucha tea and home made sauerkraut. Fermented foods have bacteria that is beneficial and support our digestive and immune systems. Please read this little book. It is good advice for us that need a gentle reminder about what our great-grand mothers would say about eating our vegetables.
